Cookie Tray into Chalkboard

Please watch young children around magnets!

My daughter loves chalk and magnets. She's only 17 months old, but is just drawn to coloring like her big brothers and playing with the magnets on the fridge.

I was trying to think of ways to entertain her in the car, and saw this idea at one point somewhere. I thought it was the perfect option for her because she enjoys them and they are flat and easily stored in the car under her seat!

I had the chalkboard paint here already, so then I bought a .99 cent pack of alphabet magnets and a cookie sheet. Do a few coats of the paint, and if you paint inside the cookie sheet, there's a ledge to keep the chalk on.

Can't wait to see her try it out!

DIY bird feeder

My boys have really taken an interest in the birds outside, especially the hummingbirds!

Earlier in the week, we picked up a cheap hummingbird feeder and made hummingbird food (boiled 4 cups of water and added a cup of sugar and refrigerated). We hung it right outside where we eat and are able to see the feeder.

Well, that left out the rest of the birds! I had mentioned to my dad that we were on our way to get some bird food and a feeder, and he told me to stop by since he had some bird food already, and he sent us home with not only the bird food, but the supplies to make a bird feeder just like my great grandmother used to make!

Here's a super simple bird feeder that you can make with your kids:

An old juice bottle with lid cleaned out
Some string
bird food
sharp scissors or box cutter, pliers, screwdriver or drill

Cut from the top halfway down the bottle "doors" on each of the 4 parts of the bottle. Only cut three sides on each piece so that the birds have a landing spot to hang out on while they eat.

Fold down. It might be kind of stiff, so use your pliers to help crease the plastic

Fill bottom with bird seed

Poke a hole in your cap

Tie a really large knot in some string

and thread through cap

Place cap back on bottle and your bird feeder is finished!

Of course you can paint it, sticker it, mod podge it, or whatever you'd like (I liked it plain, but I have a suspicion my little artist will convince me otherwise)

"New" Crayons

One thing I am so tired of in this house is broke crayons. And once they are broken (usually by the little guy), no one will color with them. I try to explain that they still work, but they have nothing to do with them.

So tonight, I got creative. After my oldest got son angry at my middle child because he had the yellow  (apparently the only yellow not broken), I decided to do something about it. (and had them help me peel the crayons)

Remember when I made these? Well, I took a lego mold that I got for Christmas and did crayons in them.
Poor Jackson keeps thinking they need to go into his drink because he has been getting lego ice in his cup, but otherwise they turned out really well. (Best part is, clean up of the mold is super easy)

You could do crayons in any shape mold! And now those broken crayons are fun once again!

Car Caddy

A little while back, I saw this cute idea here and knew my boys would enjoy it too. Wanting to come up with some "big brother" gifts, but not wanting to spend a lot, I thought it would be the perfect time to make some up.

I did one for each boy and added the crayons to the other side because they always use their crayon holders and combined, this would be good for church and other places to keep them occupied.

I know they will get a kick out of them being from their baby sister when she comes home!

Chef's Attire

Last year, we surprised the boys with a play kitchen and I had wanted to make them each an apron at the time. Well, time ran out and it just didn't happen.  Fast forward to this year and I thought it would be nice for them to each have a set because they help me so much in the kitchen already. I always offer to share my aprons but they (especially Jackson) throw a fit because they are too girly.

I used fabric I already had here and this project ended up costing me nothing!

(I did the apron design myself, but I got the hat tutorial here)  I really think they are going to love them!

Baby Chain

Today, the boys and I did our first craft in awhile. We made a baby chain from paper! Every day that passes, they will take a ring off the chain, which is one day closer until the baby arrives. I think it will help my oldest especially, to see when the baby will get here.

Now. Where are we going to hang this beast?

Chalk Table

Have you noticed lately that anything and everything can be a chalkboard?

chalk

Last month, we were going to build our little Harold an easel for his room. While I was at Ikea one day, I saw these little tables for 12 dollars. They came in a few different colors.

I was thinking how it would be the perfect size for his room and we wouldnt have to mess with building an easel. But it didnt have a chalkboard or anything on it....yet! I went to Home Depot, got some chalkboard spray, and instantly had a chalkboard table.

Little Boy's Star Apron

I thought this was a fun apron to make for a little boy that wanted an apron. His sister is getting the pink and black/white one!

Jaden dressed himself today. I asked him to model the apron for me and when I saw he still had his crazy socks on, it made me laugh. ...and the jersey is constantly being worn/washed.

Chalk Cloth into Art Bag

I made this little kit for the boys during church. One side of the bag is a "chalkboard", one side is a crayon holder (still need to add the snaps and applique a "T" on it", and inside holds a drawing pad and a pocket for markers. Theres a chalk holder that is tied onto the bag, and a cloth to wipe the chalkboard off too. My back has been hurting, so I wasnt able to put a ton of attention towards it, but I think its going to work fine for the boys!

I love this chalk cloth. I am going to make some tags up and maybe a placemat. Definitely the tags though. I only bought a fat quarter, so I want to stretch it as far as it will go!

Garden Markers

Well the garden is slowly coming to life. Its taking a bit longer I think because I started everything outside, but its starting to make its way to looking like something!

This year I wanted something cute to tell me what was dying...I mean growing out there, but couldn't really find anything 1. cute and 2. in my price range. Then I thought "Rebecca. Make them."

Let me rephrase that. My husband can make them. He cut out some wood and I glued them on some flat sticks and then, the boys and I took the cutter over to our friend Kelli's.  She was brave and spread out some newspaper in the kitchen and let all three boys paint the markers.

If you can handle crazy Harold in your kitchen...you are a true friend.

After blood, sweat and tears (just from my two), we cleaned up and took over, finding that its not as big of a sin as we thought to mix the colors.

The cutter came in handy to cut letters from vinyl. Then they are sealed with some uv resistant gloss sealer.

You could get really fancy with these..modge podge paper, paint fancy designs, etc...but I really like how the solid (the mixed paint colors by the 3 year old and the scribbly 1.11 year old) markers look. I still have more to do, but here are a few:

Freezer Paper Stenciling

Last week, my sister in law Melissa and I tackled freezer paper stenciling. Not only was it a lot of fun and the results were great but it is very addictive!

We used my cutter to do the designs. I didn't get pictures of what she did but here are some of mine:

First, I tried the robot. My big guy loves Plex from Yo Gabba Gabba so this reminds him of that (he always talks about the heart on the robot that Mommy put on)

Then I mixed it up a bit and did some tools for my mischievious little guy that is always hammering and trying to fix something

Then later, my husband wanted to design some too so he came up with these two (he was just the brains of the operation ;))

Monkey Chicken (what our older guy used to say for "Micah Jaden")

And we all know and love Harold...and his purple crayon

I even got my sister in on the fun and she did this one later:

The possibilities are endless and there are some great examples on flickr too for more ideas. I can't wait to do one for my little guys second birthday in a couple of weeks!

Jaden's new hat

So I saw this tutorial over the weeked and thought I would give it a shot. Jaden has been wanting a green hat, and i figure my first attempt wouldn't be perfect, so he would have a "play hat" (This is my child that sleeps with a baseball hat on. He loves hats.)

I like how it matches his eyes. Next time, I WILL get the pleats right :)
