another ruffle apron, because they are just so cute.

I made this one for my sister in law who needed a birthday gift. I love the colors and patterns on it, but I didnt get a very good picture. I think my sewing machine freaked out when I started using pink thread.  It just doesn't know what to do with pink thread!

I am working on a couple of things for classes at Devine Memories.  Stay tuned for previews!

Be Still.

Be Still and Know that I Am God

By JASON JACKSON
February 27, 2006 (Christian Courier)

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). God’s people are commanded to “be still” in this verse. The imperative gives a solemn duty to those in a covenant relationship with God—Israel in the Old Testament, but today, it is given to Christians (cf.Galatians 3:26-29).
What does it mean when God’s own are commanded to “be still”? The injunction is not given to restrict the mobility of God’s people. The duty represents a spiritual disposition that ought to characterize those to whom God’s unfailing promises have been given.
The word translated “be still” comes from the Hebrew term raphah. This word is found in various forms in the Old Testament, with different shades of meaning. It refers to that which is slack, or to let drop, or in some instances, to be disheartened or weak. When used of a person (as opposed to some inanimate object) it often has a negative connotation.
Interestingly, “be weak” is here commanded. In other contexts, those who let their hands “drop” from work are condemned. Those who are disheartened are commanded to take courage. In contexts where “being still” is condemned, we find that certain obligations were being neglected, and God’s people were admonished to take initiative to fulfill their duties.
Sadly, there are those who are far from “still”; they “do all the work” and give God none of the credit. They believe that by “lifting up their hands” and by “taking courage,” they can survive and thrive by the sweat of their own brow. They can do it all on their own, without any divine dependence.
Here is the irony in this term “be still.” While we must take the initiative to fulfill our responsibilities and live our lives, the uncertainties of living in a world of sin and woe will continually challenge us. Personal initiative is no substitute for reliance upon God (cf. James 4:13-17).
This command—“be still”—forces us to think on two things: that we are finite, and that God is infinite. That being the case, we need to drop our hands, go limp, relax, and “chill out.” Christian people ought to “come, behold the works of Jehovah,” (v. 8) that we may enjoy a calm confidence in him who gave us his Son.
“Shall he not also with him freely give us all things?” Paul reasoned (Romans 8:32). Psalm 46:10 encourages us to reflect on what God can do in the face of what we are unable to do.
Spiritual serenity, the psalmist admits, ought to be cultivated in spite of the shaking mountains and agitated waters (vv. 2-3; i.e., figures for the difficulties we face in life). This spiritual calm, that God commands, does not come from a lack of troubles; it derives from a steady, deep reflection on the ways God has intervened in history on behalf of his people (cf. Romans 15:4).
So as your world crumbles around you, the call from Scripture is: don’t flinch in faith in God. Stand still—not because of a self-made confidence, not because you are the most composed person in the face of disaster, not because “you’ve seen it all.” Be still because of what you know about God.
It is “God’s past” that provides calm for “our future.” Know that he is God! Know it, not merely intellectually, but practically, spiritually, and emotionally. He is your God. He is the ruler of kingdoms of this earth and the all-powerful Creator of the Universe.
If you are the last man or woman standing, be still. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth do change” (Psalm 46:1-2a). Hallelujah!

embroidery

I have always loved looking at embroidery. I have a beautiful tea towel set that Micah's grandmother made for me when we got married. I have a quilt that my grandma made me when we got married, and some pillowcases from both of these grandmas too. Both of the boys have a quilt that my mom embroidered, and Jaden has one that my grandma embroidered. None of these are used in our house because I dont want anything to happen to any of it! Haha!

I recently got into it for myself and am having so much fun! My mom had taught me a few of the embroidery stitches last year when I made a stocking for Jaden, and it has helped me get started.

I had this pattern from Micah's grandma, but it wasn't transferring, so Micah drew it on for me. I was pretty impressed with his skills.

It's my very first attempt at embroidery, and I still have the filling in on the birds to finish, but I think its so pretty so far!

I am enjoying looking around online at different patterns. There are some realllly cute vintage ones out there!  I think I am going to try to make my own of a chandelier and hang it in our bedroom. Modernize it up a bit.

Pot Holders Tutorial

How to sew your own pot holders!

Gather your material for as many as you want. I was matching my apron, and wanted 1 for each ruffle on the apron:

You will need:
  • material for front and back...the back of these is terry cloth
  • batting (do whatever thickness you would like. The best is the Insulbright. I didn't have any on hand here so I doubled a thinner batting I had)
  • ribbon for the loops if you want loops
  • thread
Now determine what size you would like. I wanted square this time, so I used another one I had as a guideline.
I cut all three materials into 9x9 squares per potholder.

Do this for front, middle and back

Oh, dont forget to cut your ribbon loops if you want them added. Mine were kind of long, so I think even 4-5 inches would be fine.

Now, pin ribbon so that the loop is inside the right side of material, ribbon edges lining up with material edge.

Then sandwich the front with the back of the potholder and batting.

Pin all three layers together (if you like)...I don't like pins, I always forget to take them out, so I usually skip them.

So it should go:

right sides together of the back and front and then batting.

Now its time to sew it all together!

Sew three sides completely, and the fourth side, leave enough room to turn right side out (about an inch and a half, its pretty thick).

Turn right side out.

Then fold that part that wasn't sewn together so that it looks finished....sew this part shut and keep going all the way around to give it a finished edge (all four sides)

Tada! Thats it! You have a pot holder :)

Let me know if you have any questions.... and don't be afraid to use them once they are finished (like I am!)

Camera Strap Cover

I have had my eye on those fun and super cute camera strap covers for awhile, but I just didn't want to shell out the money for one...then I got an idea that surely I could just make one for myself, right? I could have figured out how to sew it and all that, but then I got another idea that I bet someone else had a tutorial and I could just go from there...

Sure enough, I came upon this one....Made By Petchy. I didnt follow it exactly, but it was fun to make. It was also so gratifying to do it myself  (I am an instant gratification gal). I will definitely be making more of these!

PS...this fabric is what I have now used for: a baby sling, a boppy cover, a diaper and wipe case, headbands, a tool organizer and now a camera strap cover (I dont think I am missing anything). Its my favorite fabric ever and I think I have just about used it up. Its got such a fun velvet detailing. Its a pain to work with, as it is slippery, but it always looks nice when it is finished.

Mmm... Oranges....

My brother in law Matt always says that no where else can you get such good oranges than you get in Arizona. (He should know, he is not only a world traveler, but a former resident of Florida and now resides in California!). I didnt really understand until yesterday (I used to live in Florida), when I picked one right off the tree and ate it.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to go pick as many oranges as our little hearts desired! Micah's sister got us a nice hook up! I have never had oranges that taste this good and sweet. I am loving it!

Oh I have big plans for these oranges. I am going to make orange marmalade from the ones in the green bag..those are sour oranges. I am going to make orange juice and orange dessert, orange chicken, candied orange and maybe orange sugar too. The possibilities seem endless!...and if anyone in this house gets sick this winter, its not because we didn't have vitamin C!

Right now, I have some orange potpourri on the stove and it smells great!

orange peels
1 cinnamon stick
cloves (I didnt have whole cloves so I used ground)

Fill with water and simmer.

Great use for the orange peels that we didn't put into the compost!

I want this apron.

I love the black a la mode sheath. Seriously, I want to win it. I know I won't, but it never hurts to try!

I love aprons. One day, I want to have a really big collection. For now, I think I have 4...not bad of a start to a collection, right? One I made, and the other three were gifts. Oh and I have my old stampin' up! one...I should alter that one.

Be on the lookout for more aprons on here too. I saw a really cool craft one I want to make now. After my scrapbook page yesterday, I am excited to create again!

First Design Team Page for 2009

Wow, I have been a scrappin' slacker the past few months. Today, I cleaned up my scrap area and decided to sit down and create.  I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get anything done so I grabbed a coke, my favorite glass and the laptop with some sweet tunes and got to work. I had this page kit I needed to do for DM by tomorrow, so that was nice to work with and get back into the groove!

Here is the page that I came up with:

products used:
bazzill cardstock
pink paislee "sweet cakes" paper
daisy d's birthday rub-ons
thickers alpha stickers (i love when alphabet stickers give you enough letters to do a title... its the little things, ya know?)
ribbons
black ink for distressing

Blanket and Burp Cloth Set

A few weeks back, a friend of mine from high school messaged me (love facebook!) and asked if I would mind making a gift for her best friend who is having a baby! They aren't finding out until the birth what gender Baby is. so it had to be neutral.

Here is what we came up with. It is SO soft and elegant! I want it.

Seriously.

This is a gorgeous blanket. Its a great floor size blanket that is perfect for tummy time, and can be used for Mommy to snuggle up with Baby too!!
The burpcloths are a set of 3, made from terry cloth for wiping any of those sweet baby messes up with, and with one having the ribbon tags on each end, for Baby to touch.

And my favorite part: (hard to see it here, but it says hugs and kisses on the green ribbons)

Thank you so much for thinking of me with this gift! It was an honor making it, and I can not wait to wrap it up in its sweet baby packaging and send it to the Mommy to be!

Book for 2009

In order to be more thrifty this year, I made my own journal for my book of 2009. I used cardboard from an old box, computer paper, rings and buttons and paint:

I might add some more to it, but I think this is a nice place to keep my pictures of the day and
thoughts in for the year :)

Black and Red Flower Clock

How was everyone's New Years?! 2009 is here! How has it been 9 years since 2000 already?

My sister's room is black and red, and she fell in love with this clock I made a couple of months back:

I plan on doing this as a class sometime at Devine Memories so be on the lookout sometime in the future! Pin It

One reason why crayon holders are so cool.

Because examining table paper at urgent care makes great art! Hey, my camera on my phone takes pretty decent pictures!

We spent the evening of new year's in urgent care for jackson...he was really struggling to breath and it started getting scary. Turns out he has bronchitis, croupe and ear infection. Yikes!

I have the breathing machine ready for if he needs it during the night, meds all taken (the steriods cause loss of sleep...which explains why he is wide awake at almost 1 am). Going to be laying low for the next few days...wonder what the picture of the day will entail! Pin It

2009 Plans/Resolutions

I never like to make resolutions because I can never seem to keep them!

I am planning on working on a few things this coming year. Some of these things are (in no particular order)...
  • getting in shape
  • eating better as a family
  • working on and continuing our goals of "being green"
  • learning to knit
  • getting to know my camera better
  • drawing closer to God
  • working on our finances
  • being more thrifty
One thing I am excited to be working on is keeping a book for myself for the whole year. Thoughts I have, stories to tell, events I go through, etc. Along with this will be my picture a day goal. Each day I will take one picture that represents the day, my thoughts, whatever is going on in my head! I am hoping it catches on and it is something I can stick with throughout the years. What a neat thing to be able to look back on as we raise our family and live life!

What kind of resolutions or plans do you have? Do you stick with them? Pin It

Your mom goes to college.

I got really funny looks wearing this. People either got it (like my sister or the young guy at Best Buy who just kept looking at me and laughing) or they didn't (like the returns guy at walmart and my dad... "but what does it mean?") . This shirt is so cool. Napolean Dynamite is so cool. Micah is so cool for getting me this shirt and loving me despite my sense of humor and knowing that I would think its so cool.

I know I probably get on people's nerves for saying it a lot, but I think its funny and thats what counts, right? :)

Pot Holders W/ Apron

I am loving pot holders right now. The problem with pot holders though, is that (mine at least) get stained up, burnt up, and just well loved.

I made a set of four of these for my sister in law...and now I want to make more! I looked at one of mine, and went from there with it.

I plan on making a lot more, and will post a tutorial with the next batch!

(and here is the matching apron that my sweet sister in law was nice enough to take a picture of me for!)
